At the ��ݮ��ý College of Education, we believe that everyone should become better informed and play a role in improving our communities.

Civic engagement has the potential to help students develop their capacities for understanding their role in complex social, economic, and political systems. Through our new EdTerpsEngage initiative, COE will provide resources and information to our community on how they can maximize their impact, stay informed, stay involved, and exercise their civic rights and duties.

Every vote matters and every vote counts. A collaborative effort from multiple groups within the College, the #EdTerpsVote campaign provides students, faculty and staff with resources to register to vote, become informed about candidates and issues they support, and cast their ballots in upcoming elections. #EdTerpsVote encourages everyone to speak their mind on Election Day!

September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

September 9: Operation Stick It: 9/11 Remembrance will take place on September 9 at 5 p.m. at the McKeldin Mall Sundial. Now in its ninth year, the student-run event, which is sponsored by the TerpVets Student Association and the Office of Student Veteran Life, brings together veteran and military-connected students, faculty, staff, and alumni, first responders from College Park, students from the Muslim Students��ݮ��ý� Association, and the greater campus community to plant 3,000 flags on the McKeldin Mall to remember the lives lost on 9/11, and to call for unity. September 11: The 2nd Annual 9/11 Flag of Honor Memorial Across America Memorials will begin at 8 a.m. at Meade High School Stadium (1100 Clark Road, Fort Meade, MD, 20755) and will be followed by an optional service project at 9:45 a.m. This event is organized by the college��ݮ��ý�s public school partners in Anne Arundel Public Schools, Meade High School��ݮ��ý�s Signature and AVID programs, Glen Burnie��ݮ��ý�s Signature program, and the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Student Service Learning Leadership Team.
September 11: The college��ݮ��ý�s Civic Education & Engagement Initiative will co-facilitate a leadership retreat with the ��ݮ��ý Civic Education Coalition for their Youth Advisory Council. Teaching about 9/11

Sunday, September 11 marks the 21st anniversary of 9/11 and 13 years since Congress designated 9/11 as September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Teaching about 9/11 is both important and complicated. Teachers must take great care to develop lessons that are age-appropriate, aligned with their curriculum and standards, and engaging. Teaching about 9/11 can also be difficult because teachers and members of their school community may know people who were killed or injureed on 9/11 or in subsequent wars or they may have experienced the anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant intolerance that followed.

With support from Youth Service America, the ��ݮ��ý College of Education has curated resources to support educators who want to teach about 9/11 and how its aftermath continues to impact people in our country and around the world. The teaching materials include a range of primary sources, activities, and lesson plans for different ways to teach about 9/11 to different age groups. They also align with how the teaching of 9/11 has evolved in the last 20 years.

In keeping with the national call to service on 9/11, resources for educators who want to incorporate service and service-learning into their teaching are also available. September 11 provides an opportunity for teachers and students to transform the day into one of service and civic engagement.
